When the flowers bloom and cover the sky with shades of white and pink, Japanese families come together to not just celebrate the beauty of the view but also the deeper cultural and philosophical meaning it signifies. This period is also regarded as a time of renewal. This festival is held to be extremely important in the culture of Japan.

Hanami, that is the tradition of enjoying the beauty of the cherry blossoms or the white, pink flowers; is usually done by having a family picnic underneath the trees. Many even attend the Cherry Blossoms Festival.

Yozakura is the name given to Hanami done at night. Thus in simple words seeing the flowers at night. Couples, especially, love coming out at night to enjoy the flowers. Common activities include lying under the trees, having a barbeque, picnic etc.

The blooming varies across Japan. It starts from the South and slowly moves to the North. Some locations have the oldest trees, some have the most number of trees, some are closer to tourist destinations etc. Thus, based on your interest, you should choose which place you want to visit.

Once you have decided on a place, you need to know the period of the blooming. One thing to keep in mind while planning your trip that it takes just a week for the flowers to bloom and a week after the full bloom for the flower to last. Thus, be particular about the dates.
